Few cities walk as much as Singapore does. Between MRT interchanges, long days on your feet at work, weekend hikes up Bukit Timah and the humidity that makes every step feel heavier, our feet put in serious overtime. It is no surprise that foot reflexology is one of the most loved massages on the island.
If you have never tried one, though, it is natural to wonder what actually happens. Will it tickle? Will it hurt? What do you wear? This guide walks you through a first Oriental Foot Massage at Ancient Dynasty, from booking to the moment you stand up feeling lighter on your feet.
What is oriental foot reflexology?
Reflexology is a traditional practice in which the therapist applies precise thumb, finger and knuckle pressure to specific points on the feet. In the oriental tradition, these points are thought to relate to different areas of the body, and the practice has been passed down for generations across Asia.
We offer it for what our guests value it for: a deeply relaxing, grounding experience that gives tired feet some well-earned attention. It is a wellness treatment, not a medical one, so if you have a health concern, please speak to your doctor.
Before you arrive
Choosing a session length
Our body massages, Oriental Foot Massage included, are available in 30, 60, 90 and 120 minute sessions. For a first visit, most guests pick one of two:
- 30 minutes for a quick refresh, for example during a lunch break or after a long day of errands.
- 60 minutes for a fuller, slower session where you have time to properly settle in.
What to wear
Comfortable clothes are all you need. Loose trousers that roll up easily, or shorts, make it simple for your therapist to reach your ankles and lower legs, which are usually included as part of the session.
Things to tell us
Let us know when you book, or when you arrive, if you have any foot or ankle injury, broken skin, a recent sprain, swelling, or if you are pregnant or have a medical condition. This is not to put you off. It simply helps your therapist adjust the pressure or avoid areas that need care.
When you arrive
Come a few minutes early so you are not rushing in. Your therapist will confirm your session length, ask how you like your pressure and check whether there is anything they should know about. This is also a good moment to mention if you are ticklish. Firm, steady pressure tends to be much less ticklish than light touch, so it is worth saying so the session starts at the right level.
What happens during the session
Every therapist has their own rhythm, but a typical first session flows roughly like this:
- Warming up. Gentle, broad strokes over the feet and ankles to help you relax and let the therapist feel where tension is sitting.
- The soles and arches. Slow, deliberate thumb and knuckle pressure along the soles, arches and heels. This is the heart of the session.
- Toes and the tops of the feet. Smaller, more detailed work around each toe and across the top of the foot.
- Ankles and lower legs. Kneading and gliding strokes up towards the calves, which often feel surprisingly tight after a day of walking.
- Winding down. Softer strokes again to finish, so you are not jolted straight back into the day.
Many guests find themselves dozing off halfway through, which is a very good sign.
How should the pressure feel?
Reflexology works with firm, focused pressure, so expect to feel it. Some points will feel more sensitive than others, and that is normal. What you are looking for is a strong but comfortable sensation, the kind people often call “good pain”, where you can still breathe slowly and relax into it.
It should never feel sharp or make you tense up. If it does, tell your therapist straight away and they will lighten the pressure. There is no prize for enduring more than you enjoy.
After your session
Take a moment before you stand up, have some water, and walk slowly for the first few steps. Many guests describe their feet as feeling light, warm and relaxed afterwards. It is a lovely way to end a long day, and some regulars book it every week or two simply because it has become part of how they unwind.
Foot massage or full body massage?
They are quite different experiences. A foot massage keeps you comfortably clothed and focuses on the feet and lower legs, which makes it an easy first step if you are new to massage or short on time. A full body massage such as a Swedish Oil Massage or Deep Tissue Oil Massage works on the back, shoulders, arms and legs with oil, and suits days when your whole body feels the week. If you are torn between those two, our guide to deep tissue vs Swedish massage will help you decide.
There is no wrong answer. Plenty of our guests alternate: feet one visit, full body the next.

Quick answers to first-timer questions
Will it tickle?
Usually not for long. Reflexology uses firm pressure, which most ticklish guests find far more comfortable than light touch. Let your therapist know and they will keep it steady.
Do I need to wash my feet before coming?
Coming as you are is fine. If you have been out walking all day and would feel more comfortable freshening up, just let us know when you arrive.
Can I book on the same day?
Often, yes, depending on availability. Message us on WhatsApp or call the hotline and we will tell you the next free slot.
